Box Score (PDF)HANOVER, N.H. – The UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team hung tough, but fell in a non-conference game, 18-9, to Dartmouth College on Tuesday night.
"We had a good first quarter, then got back in it again in the third, said Head Coach
Ed Stephenson. "We just couldn't sustain an offensive, and they did a good job taking advantage."
The River Hawks (1-12) took the 1-0 lead just 3:09 into the game, when
Martin Winter (Lake Oswego, Ore.) notched his fifth goal of the season.
The slim lead held up until the Big Green (5-7) used two goals in a span of 22 seconds of game time to take a 2-1 lead. Cam Lee scored with nine seconds remaining in the first quarter, and Adam Fishman gave Dartmouth the lead just 13 seconds into the second quarter.
After the Big Green extended the lead to 3-1,
Zack Schwartz (Huntington, N.Y.) cut the visitor's deficit to 3-2 with 8:30 to go until halftime. However, Dartmouth went on a 5-0 run, including three goals in the final 68 seconds, to take an 8-2 halftime lead.
In the third quarter UMass Lowell outscored the hosts 5-3 to close the gap to 11-7 heading into the fourth.
Nicholas Pino (North Andover, Mass.) scored his eighth goal of the season less than three minutes into the quarter, and Winter added his second of the night with 9:10 remaining.
Kyle Strong (Groton, Mass.) continued his hot streak with two consecutive goals in the quarter. He now has five goals in his past two games. With the score 10-4 in favor of Dartmouth, Strong notched his first with 5:56 on the clock. The junior cut the deficit to 10-6 with 3:06 remaining in the third.
Sean Tyrrell (Calgary, Alberta) added his first of three goals with 45 seconds left in the quarter to close out the scoring, the River Hawks' lone man-up tally. He scored both goals in the final quarter for UMass Lowell, one with 8:23 remaining and completing the hat trick with 2:06 on the clock.
The Big Green went 2-for-8 on extra man opportunities, including going scoreless on five in the first half. The River Hawks capitalized once on five chances.
Dartmouth's Blair Friedensohn earned the win with 10 saves in 55:13, and
Alex Desmarais (Atkinson, N.H.) made eight saves in 34:26 for the River Hawks.
Christopher Litchfield (Burlington, Mass.) made two saves in over 25 minutes of relief.
UMass Lowell will end its first season of Division I play with a neutral site game against Virginia Military Institute on April 26 (1 p.m.), hosted by Marywood University.Â
