LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell River Hawks dropped the final home game of their inaugural Division I season, 20-9, against Stony Brook on Friday night.
"I thought we scrapped really well," said UMass Lowell Head Coach
Ed Stephenson. "Probably the best we've done just fighting on ground balls. I thought the guys really gave a good effort. On the offensive end [Martin] Winter had a day today, scored his first goal and got the hat trick so we're excited for him. I don't think there's any such thing as a perfect game, I thought we played 60 minutes of hard lacrosse and I was excited about that. We didn't stop until the final whistle."
UMass Lowell (1-10, 0-5) battled closely with Stony Brook in the first quarter, finding two goals from sophomore attackman
Martin Winter (Lake Oswego, Ore.), the first of his career. Freshman midfielder
Keenan Koswin (Winnipeg, Manitoba) also notched a goal for the River Hawks late in the first quarter to cut the Seawolves deficit to two.
The Seawolves (10-2, 3-1) went on an 8-2 scoring run in the second quarter, making it a 13-5 lead for Stony Brook heading into the second half. Sophomore defender
Christopher Litchfield (Burlington, Mass.) and freshman defender
Nick Zakucia (Johns Creek, Ga.) found the back of the net for the River Hawks in the second quarter. Zakucia's tally was the first goal of his career.
The River Hawks would find goals from sophomore midfielder
Sam Klingsporn (Aloha, Ore.), freshman attackman
Matthew Balter (West Sand Lake, N.Y.), Sophomore attackman
Nicholas Pino (North Andover, Mass.) and a third goal of the night from Winter in the second half. The Seawolves proved to be too much for UMass Lowell to hold off defensively, as they were able to put up seven more goals in the second half.
Winter was the top performer of the night for the River Hawks, while eight other players each contributed a point. Stony Brook's Brody Eastwood had a stellar performance, notching 11 points (10g,1a) in the game. Attacker Mike Rooney also had a great night for Stony Brook, adding eight points (2g,6a).
The Seawolves led shots in the game 40-25, and ground balls 47-30. They also controlled many of the faceoffs, winning 24 out of 32 total.
Sophomore goalkeepers
Giles Ober (Southborough, Mass.) and
Alex Desmarais (Atkinson, N.H.) split the night in net for the River Hawks. Ober registered five saves, while Desmarais was able to stop six.
The River Hawks will be back in action next Saturday, April 18th as they travel to Maryland where they will take on UMBC in their final America East matchup of the season.
