VESTAL, N.Y. – Micaela Sanborn (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored a career-high three goals as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team fell in defeat, 15-6, to the Binghamton Bearcats Sunday afternoon.
"We were competitive in a lot of areas today, but we were unable to coordinate it at the right times," said Head Coach
Carissa Medeiros. "They went on a couple of runs and we were unable to respond and string a few of our own together."
After the Bearcats (4-5, 1-1) took a 1-0 lead within the first minute,
Jesse Jay (Amherst, Mass.) scored her team-high 12th goal of the season to knot up the score.
Kaylan DiModugno (Deer Park, N.Y.) sent a pass from behind the net to Jay, who sent a one-timer from right in front of the crease into the twine.
The back-and-forth action continued for the River Hawks (0-11, 0-2), when Sanborn scored her second free-position goal in as many games to tie the game at 2-2 with under 20 minutes to play in the first half.
Binghamton went a 4-0 run to take a 6-2 lead before UMass Lowell could respond.
Emily Wright (Avon, Conn.) ended the drought with 10:33 left to play, as she ran though defense and let a quick mid-level shot that beat Erin McNulty.
Sanborn scored her second goal of the game with 16 seconds left in the first half, to cut the deficit to 8-4. Jay spotted the Chelmsford, Mass. native cutting toward the net and Sanborn ran in all alone and fired a laser shot past McNulty.
The Bearcats extended their lead to 14-4 over the first 19 minutes of the second half.
Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored her eighth goal of the season on the rebound of Jay's original shot with 10:36 remaining in the second half. Sanborn completed the hat-trick 37 seconds later on a low side-angle shot to beat McNulty.
Renne Kiviat scored six goals to lead Binghamton, and Sophia Racciatti added two goals and four assists.
Courtney Barrett (South Burlington, Vt.) made 13 saves, two shy of tying her career-high. She also recorded a game-high seven groundballs and two caused turnovers.
The River Hawks are back in action on April 1, when they host New Hampshire under the lights of Wicked Blue Field at 7 p.m.
