LOWELL, Mass. – Goals were scored by six different team members, as UMass Lowell (0-12, 0-3) dropped a 22-6 decision against America East opponent New Hampshire (4-7, 1-2) on Wednesday evening at Wicked Blue Field.
"We need to break this six-goal curse," said Head Coach
Carissa Medeiros. "We had a little bit of a bookend game tonight. We came out really strong, which was awesome, but then we got a little lost in the middle before finding the fire again at the end of the game. We just need to find a way to string together our runs and not let a team tally so many unanswered goals. We're getting there, and I certainly think ending on a strong note makes it hard to be extremely disappointed, but we need to be able to play a complete 60 minutes."
Freshman
Jesse Jay (Amherst, N.H.) led the River Hawks with one goal and two assists on the night. Classmate
Micaela Sanborn (Chelmsford, Mass.) posted one goal and one assist, as well. Laura Puccia paced all scorers with seven goals for the Wildcats.
The River Hawks were quick to attack, as Jay fed freshman
Erin Hatch (Billerica, Mass.) for a shot past the opposing keeper, making the score 1-0 less than three minutes into play. Freshman
Emily Wright (Avon, Conn.) then extended the home squad's buffer to two with 26:29 remaining in the first half.
UNH retaliated, however, as Marissa Gurello sparked the Wildcats' offense to life, scoring the first of 15 unanswered goals before the break.
Coming out of halftime, Gurello and teammate Krissy Schafer converted on free position shots to put the visitors ahead, 17-2, with 27:27 still to go.
At 23:17, freshman
Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) broke the silence and found the back of the net for UMass Lowell with an assist from Sanborn.
Although the Wildcats would score four times in the next seven minutes, the River Hawks followed with a three-goal spurt beginning with a strike from Sanborn at 12:53. Freshman
Gabrielle Zorkers (Quincy, Mass.) added her first career goal before Jay finished on a free position attempt to make the score 21-6.
With one minute left to go, UNH's Lexi Moirano went to goal to seal the 22-6 decision for the visitors.
The River Hawks will return to action with their first of two straight road games on Saturday, April 11 when they visit league foe UMBC for a 3 p.m. tilt.
