Game 2 (PDF) TEANECK, N.J. – The UMass Lowell baseball team split Sunday's doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson, winning 6-4 in the frontend before dropping a 5-1 decision in the nightcap at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.
The River Hawks and Knight both stand at 3-6 after the twin bill on Sunday.
In the first game the River Hawks got on the board in the first when Matt Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) hit a leadoff double to center before
Danny Mendick (Rochester, N.Y.) reached on a fielders choice and stole second.
Matt Mottola (Newburyport, Mass.) brought them home with a 2-RBI single to left before coming home on a double to center by
Tyler Noe (Lynnfield, Mass.). After
Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.) drew a walk
Brice Erickson (Leominster, Mass.) ripped a single up the middle to bring Noe around and give the River Hawks a 4-0 edge.
The Knights used a three run third to climb back into the ballgame before the River Hawks capitalized on a pair of FDU miscues to add an insurance run. DeGroot drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an error by Fairleigh Dickinson pitcher Joe Borelli.
Senior ace
Christian Lavoie (Hopkinton, Mass.) started and went four innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits. Freshman
Nick Kuzia (Seymour, Conn.) came in relief and picked up the win going 4 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.
Ian Strom (Hopedale, Mass.) picked up the save for the River Hawks.
In the backend of the games, the Knights scored a run off
Kevin Veilleux (Manchester, N.H.) in the first before adding three more in the third. FDU's Ryan Brennan doubled to right center to score Dylan Sprague before Riley Moonan added a double of his own two batters later to bring Brennan around to score. Chris Grupp singled to right next to bring Moonan in.
Consolmagno scored the River Hawks lone run in the top of the fifth. He drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a ground out by
Nick Barry (Grafton, Mass.) before stealing third and scoring on a passed ball by FDU's Ryan McGrath.
The River Hawks will be in action again tomorrow when they take on Hofstra at Mitchel Field on the campus Nassau Community College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
