River Hawks Set for Conference Opener at Hartford

Lowell, Mass. – The UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team plays their third game in eight days as they open conference play on the road at Hartford on March 14 at 1 p.m.

River Hawk Recap
UMass Lowell fell to the Providence Friars at home on Tuesday by the final count of 11-6. Courtesy of a goal by freshman Cory Highfield (Toronto, Ontario), the River Hawks scored the opening goal of the game and carried a 1-0 lead through one quarter. Highfield finished the game with three goals while fellow freshman Jon Phillips (Delta, B.C.) chipped in two goals. For the fifth straight game, sophomore goalie Giles Ober (Southborough, Mass.) registered double-digit saves with 12 in the contest.

Saturday's conference opener at Hartford also represents the inaugural America East game for UMass Lowell.

Killing Them Softly
UMass Lowell held Providence scoreless in five chances with an extra man during Tuesday's game. The River Hawks lead the America East with a .750 penalty killing percentage.

Ober and Out
Sophomore goalie Giles Ober (Southborough, Mass.) has had a strong season between the pipes for the River Hawks. He is averaging 10.6 saves per game in five contests this season.

Ramping up the Pressure
UMass Lowell has been strong this season at forcing their opponent into mistakes. They are averaging 8.60 caused turnovers per game, tops in America East.

Scouting Hartford
Preseason picked fifth in America East, the Hawks enter Saturday's tilt with a 2-2 record in the non-conference season. Hartford is coming off a thrilling 10-9 win in overtime at Quinnipiac on March 7 thanks to a game-winning goal by freshman Griffin Feiner. Senior attackman Kevin O'Shea leads the team with 13 points and his seven goals are tied for the most on the team with senior midfielder Matt Carroll.

"We are excited for our America East Conference opener at Hartford this weekend. We are opening with one of the top teams in the conference this year as they have four seniors leading them on offense combined with three four-year student-athletes on defense. This will be a great challenge."
