LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell Men's Lacrosse team fell to Wagner College, 14-6 , on Saturday afternoon at the Cushing Field Complex. The River Hawks are now 0-3 on the season, while the Seahawks gained their first victory of the year, improving to 1-2.

"It was good to be competitive on the faceoffs in the first half," said Head Coach Ed Stephenson. "The score indicated our success on the faceoffs, it was a two-goal game at the half against a very competitive team. We struggled in the third quarter, they won more faceoffs and they out ground-balled us by ten. I don't think we shot well, but give a lot of credit to their goalie, I though he played a great game. I think it would have been a much different game if we finished our close range opportunities in the first half."

Wagner got to the back of the net early on, adding the first three goals of the game before freshman midfielder Jon Phillips (Delta, B.C.) got the first tally for the River Hawks with 0:42 left in the first quarter. Freshman attacker Matthew Balter (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) would also score in the first quarter with just one second remaining to bring UMass Lowell within two goals.

Phillips would add another goal in the second quarter, before sophomore midfielder Sam Klingsporn (Aloha, Ore.) would add two back-to-back goals in a span of 45 seconds. Wagner also added three goals in the second quarter, making the score 7-5 Seahawks at halftime.

Wagner would take over the game in the second half, outscoring the River Hawks 7-1 before the final horn would sound. The Seahawks notched seven straight goals before Klingsporn would find the back of the net again for UMass Lowell with 1:07 left in the game.

The Seahawks outshot the River Hawks 46-35, and lead the game in ground balls 38-28 over UMass Lowell. The River Hawks won 11 of 24 faceoffs in the game, and were 1-for-3 with the extra man opportunity.

Sophomore goalkeeper Giles Ober (Southborough, Mass.) made 11 saves in the River Hawks loss. Klingsporn lead the River Hawks in scoring with three goals, while Phillips (2g) and Balter (1g,1a) both added two points.

Patrick McMenamin (3g,1a) and Paul DeVita (2g,2a) were the leading scorers for the Seahawks with four points each.

The River Hawks are back in action next Saturday, March 7th when they will take on NJIT on the road. The start time is slated for 12:00 p.m.
