LOWELL, Mass. -- Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored her third goal of the year, and
Emily Wright (Avon, Conn.) scored her second, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener, 24-4, to No. 6 Boston College Wednesday evening.
Devon McKercher (Vestal, N.Y.) and
Jesse Jay (Amherst, N.H.) added their first career goals.
"We knew coming into the game that Boston College would be one of, if not, our hardest of the season. They work really hard, and we were definitely anticipating a struggle and an uphill battle," said Head Coach
Carissa Medeiros. "I was happy with the way our team responded in the second half, as a coach I could not have asked for anything more. At halftime I told our girls that it's not about the number of goals you score, it's really all about going out there, fighting, working hard together as a team, and having fun. I could not be happier with the adjustments we made in the second half."
The Eagles (2-0) stormed out to a 6-0 lead within the first 6:45, started on a goal by Sarah Mannelly after 17 seconds had expired. The visitors continued the momentum to take a 16-0 advantage into halftime.
Once again, Sokol was the first River Hawk to get on the scoreboard, this time coming on a free-position shot 2:09 into the second half to cut the deficit to 19-1. The midfielder has now scored in two straight games, including the program's first goal in history and first ever home goal.
McKercher notched her first career tally with 10:12 remaining in the hlaf, off of Sokol's first career assist. McKercher gathered the pass from Sokol in the middle of the 8-meter arc and beat Lindsey Reder high.Â
UMass Lowell (0-2) used a 30-second span to score its final two goals of the evening, starting at the 2:46 mark. Wright collected a Sokol pass in the middle of the arc, took a couple steps to the top of the crease and easily beat Reder. Jay scored her first career goal, unassisted at 1:46, taking the ball from the clear line, into the arc and got off a low shot into the back of the net.Â
Mikaela Rix and Mannelly lead Boston College with a game-high four goals apiece. Covie Stanwick and Caroline Margolis added three goals each.Â
Courtney Barrett (South Burlington, Vt.) made 12 saves, and recorded three ground balls, tied with
Ashley Horan (Methuen, Mass.) for the team-high.
Olivia Wisner (Sylvania, Ohio) played 5:47 of relief and made her first two collegiate saves.
The River Hawks went 1-of-5 on free-position shots, their first conversion of the season. The Eagles went 5-of-9, including a perfect 3-of-3 in the second half.
UMass Lowell returns to action on February 25, for a non-conference road clash against Iona College at 3 p.m.
