LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell volleyball team (3-16, 0-2) fell in straight sets to the Stony Brook Seawolves (6-12, 2-0), 21-25, 25-27, 15-25, Sunday afternoon.
The River Hawks jumped out to a 7-2 lead in set one thanks to three kills from
Elima Ahzi (Chula Vista, Calif.), and an ace from
Megan Young (Westlake Village, Calif.). UMass Lowell did not trail in the first set until the Seawolves took a 20-19 lead, an advantage the visitors didn't relinquish.
Stony Brook trailed early in set two as well, 10-7, before going on a 6-0 run to take a 13-10 lead. The River Hawks battled back to knot up the score at 18-18 behind two kills and an ace off the hands of
Rachel Arnason (Kelowna, B.C.). Both teams exchanged points before Stony Brook scored twice after UMass Lowell tied it at 25-25.
The guests took control of set three, 10-1, until the River Hawks cut the deficit to 19-13 with a mini 3-0 spurt. The Seawolves responded by taking four of the next six points.
Stony Brook's Kathy Fletcher and Nicole Vogel had match-highs with 12 kills and 33 assists, respectively.
Ahzi led the UMass Lowell with nine kills, followed by Arnason (8) and
Lauren Bennett (Wilmington, Mass.) with five. Freshman
Alexa Toth (Portlan, Ore.) added 14 assists and
Lindsey Visvardis (Homer Glen, Ill.) had 21 digs.
Lade Adeniyi (Springfield, Ill.) controlled the net presence with a match-high five blocks.
UMass Lowell is back in action for their first road America East contest, taking on Hartford on October 9 at 7 p.m.
