River Hawks Host UMBC on Senior Day

LOWELL, Mass. –
The UMass Lowell men's soccer team will host UMBC on Senior Day, October 31 at 2 p.m. The contest marks the River Hawks' last home tilt of the 2015 season.

Looking at the River Hawks
UMass Lowell (7-7-1, 2-2-1 AE) played a pair of double overtime matches last week, tying Vermont, 0-0, on Oct. 24 and falling in the 108th minute at Brown, 1-0.

Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) leads the team in scoring with four goals and three assists for 11 points. Guilherme Rodrigues (Lowell, Mass.) and Jay Marchand (North Andover, Mass.) both have six points (2g, 2a). In net for the River Hawks, Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) has recorded a career-high seven shutouts with 42 saves and a 1.03 goals against average.

Scouting UMBC
The three-time defending America East Champion Retrievers sit at 8-5-3 overall and 1-2-2 in conference play. They defeated Drexel, 1-0, on Oct. 27, but fell to Binghamton in their last America East contest, 2-1, on Oct. 24. Darius Madison leads all scorers with 15 points (6g, 3a). Michael Scott helps facilitate the offense will a team-high five assists. Goalkeeper Billy Heavner has five shutouts on the season, making 51 stops with a 0.93 goals against average.

"UMBC is a strong team and will be a tough test. They're well coached and will be organized. We'll need to be disciplined on the defensive side of things. If we are patient, we'll be able to create opportunities."

Series History
UMBC holds a 2-0 edge in the all-time series after last year's 2-1 defeat of the River Hawks.

One Final Time
Four UMass Lowell seniors will suit up for their final game in the friendly confines of Cushing Field. Forward Jay Marchand, midfielders Nane Osei (Ewing, N.J.) and Augusto Trento (Leominster, Mass.) along with back Abel Wasswa (Malden, Mass.) will all be honored in a pre-game ceremony.

Honors and Awards
Kroll earned America East Co-Player of the Week honors on Sept. 21 … Edward Venta-Yepes (Lowell, Mass.) was named America East Rookie of the Week on Sept. 14 … Nana Osei (Ewing, N.J.), Jay Marchand (North Andover, Mass.) and Venta-Yepes were all named to the Brooklyn Bridge Cup All-Tournament Team.

Save Some Space in the Record Book
With Kroll's seven shutouts this season he has 12 career blank sheets, good for fourth place all-time.

Other Notables
The River Hawks are 2-1 this season against teams that made the 2014 NCAA Tournament … the win against LIU Brooklyn on Sept. 6 marked the first win in the series history… the victory over Monmouth on August 28 was the first season-opening win for the River Hawks in the Division I era.
