PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A goal in the 108th minute was the difference as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (7-7-1) fell in its final non-conference game of the season, 1-0, to the Brown Bears (8-5-1) in double overtime Tuesday night.
"I thought we put together a pretty good performance, but it came down to one play in the end," said Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "Now we'll put our focus on our last home game this Saturday as we celebrate our seniors' last home game."
Quinn English received a pass from Will Cross and sent the final shot of the night past the left side of
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.). The hosts outshot the River Hawks 14-8, including a 5-2 advantage in the overtime periods.
The Bears came inches away from getting the decision in regulation time when Louis ZIngas had his shot hit the post with 30 seconds left on the clock.
Both teams recorded five shots apiece in the first 45 minutes, with each keeper making one save. After
Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) and
Augusto Trento (Leominster, Mass.) had shots go wide,
Edward Venta-Yepes (Lowell, Mass.) had his shot go on target.
In the second half Brown registered four shots to the guests' one, but only Will Cross' shot in the 51st minute needed to be stopped by Kroll.
Guilherme Rodrigues (Lowell, Mass.) got off the first scoring chance in the overtime periods but Teo Norhagen made the save.
Guilherme Desousa (Everett, Mass.) had his shot blocked in the final seconds of the first period.
Brown applied the pressure in the second 10-minutes, recording two shots before the game-winner, with Kroll making a save in the 102nd minute.
The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 31 against UMBC for Senior Day. There will be pregame ceremonies to honor Trento,
Nana Osei (Ewing, N.J.),
Jay Marchand (North Andover, Mass.) and
Abel Wasswa (Malden, Mass.). Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
