LOWELL, Mass. –
UMass Lowell (3-8) dropped their conference opener on Thursday, October 1 to UMBC (3-7-2) thanks to a pair of second half goals by the Retrievers.

"I thought we had a pretty good mind set even through a bunch of adversity before the game," said Head Coach Joel Bancroft. "The first half we outshot them, and had the game in a good spot. The second half we just didn't come out with energy that UMBC did."

The home team, thanks to a strong back line, held the advantage in the first half, outshooting the visitors 6-0.

In the 16th minute Emily Duchesne (Hooksett, N.H.) found her self in a one-on-one opportunity against the Retriever's goalkeeper but sent the shot wide leaving the score tied, 0-0. Shannon Groffie (Toms River, N.J.) also found the net in the first half but neither shots were strong enough to get past Jen Nance.

UMBC put themselves on the board first, in the 62nd minute, after Gabby Boehmer received a short pass in front of the goal sneaking it past Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) on a cross from Fern Peters. In the 85th minute, the visitors added one more to their lead when Amanda Dailey took a shot from the top of the box past Schneider, finding the back corner of the net.

The River Hawks went on to create opportunities throughout the second half but were held to only one shot by a tough Retrievers defense.

Thursday's contest marked just the third meeting between the River Hawks and the Retrievers. With tonight's win, the Retrievers now lead the all-time series, 2-1. The River Hawks are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 4, traveling to Maine to take on the Black Bears.
