ORONO, Me. – Freshman
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) recorded a career-high nine saves on Sunday. Despite a great effort in the net by Schneider, UMass Lowell (3-9-0, 0-2 AE) lost a heartbreaker in overtime, 1-0, to America East Conference opponent Maine (6-4-1, 1-0-1 AE).
"This team put everything it had into the 98 minutes we played," said Head Coach
Joel Bancroft. "They battled as well as executed and in the biggest moments late in the game, and in overtime we carried this match. Much like in the UMBC game we were very short handed and that never once deterred this gorup today. These types of games end in two ways, either a big error or a big individual effort. Credit Maine to finding that individual effort to get the win. The difference in this game was who finished their moment. I couldn't be prouder of this team. Our focus is now on UNH."
Several different River Hawks had chances to break the, 0-0, tie in regulation, but Maine's goalkeeper Claudia Dube-Trempe made four saves on the day, notching her fourth shutout of the year.
Although the home team out shot the River Hawks, 13-5, in regulation play, UMass Lowell came out applying pressure early. In the 1st minute,
Carolyn Ragon (Melrose, Mass.) tallied the teams first shot but Trempe was there to make the save. Shortly after,
Thalia Petsis (Toronto, Ont.) connected with the ball, sending it high over the net.
Freshman
Katelyn Vieira (Warwick. R.I.) led the offense for the visitors in the second half, taking the only squads only two shots.
In the 98th minute, Maine's Anetra Byfield had the game-winning goal, giving her team their first conference win of the season. Byfield's shot came from 18 yards out, cleared the hands of Schneider and found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Sunday's contest marked the third meeting between UMass Lowell and Maine, as Maine now leads the all-time series, 3-0. The River Hawks are back in action on Thursday Oct. 8, traveling to New Hampshire to take on UNH.
