HighlightsPROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The No. 5 ranked UMass Lowell hockey team fell at No. 18 Providence, 4-1, on Saturday night at Schneider Arena in Hockey East action.
UMass Lowell is now 15-7-3 overall (8-4-2 HEA) with the loss and Providence improves to 16-8-1 and 8-5-0 in league play.
The River Hawks took an early 1-0 lead on junior forward
Adam Chapie's (Oxford, Mich.) seventh goal of the season just 7:49 in the opening period. Freshman defenseman
Tyler Mueller (Regina, Sask.) took a shot from the high slot and Chapie put it home after the puck sailed over Jon Gillies' shoulder.
Providence poured on four unanswered goals in the second period beginning with Ross Mauermann's power play blast from the right point, which beat River Hawks' goaltender
Jeff Smith (Maple Ridge, B.C.) high glove side at the 10 minute mark. Noel Accari scored off a rebound to give PC the 2-1 lead just 57 seconds later for his eighth goal of the season. Anthony Florentino and Jake Walman added goals in the last six minutes of the period to give the Friars a three-goal lead heading into the locker room at the end of the second stanza.
Smith made his first start in 11 games for the River Hawks making 19 saves in 38:16 of action. Freshman goalie Olli Kalkaja (Oulu, Finland) made his second appearance of the weekend, recording nine stops in the final 21:44 of play. Gillies stopped 22 shots in his 14th win (50th career) of the season for the Friars.
Providence went 2-for-9 on the power play, while UMass Lowell went 0-for-8 with the man advantage.
The River Hawks return to action on Friday, January 30th at Merrimack College. Game time is 7 p.m. from Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN3 and Fox College Sports and locally on WBIN-TV.
