Box Score (.PDF)BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The UMass Lowell men's soccer team won its second straight game, scoring two first half goals to defeat the La Salle Explorers 2-0. The River Hawks finished the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Windjammer Classic with a 2-0 record, and crowned as tournament champions on goal differential.Â
UMass Lowell (2-2) got on the board in the 11th minute on
Wuilito Fernandes' (Praia, Cape Verde) second goal of the weekend.
Guilherme Rodrigues (Lowell, Mass.)Â sent a pass to the top of the box and Fernandes bent the shot around the Explorers' keeper, David Tuckinsky, into the far right corner.Â
Homero Morais doubled the score on a tap-in past Tuckinsky off a cross from
Richard Mulo (Malden, Mass.), who sent the ball from the right off the box to the left post.Â
The River Hawks were outshot 16-9, and only earned two corner kicks to La Salle's 10. Mulo led UMass Lowell with three shots, and Joe Farrell led the Explorers with four.Â
Freshman
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) made seven saves to earn his second win and first collegiate shutout. Tuchinsky made one save.Â
Fernandes was named the tournament MVP as he, Morais, Kroll, and
Carlos Ruiz (East Boston, Mass.) were named to the All-Tourney Team.Â
UMass Lowell will look to make it three-straight wins with a matchup at Bryant University on September 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.Â
