HAMDEN, Conn. -- The UMass Lowell women's volleyball team earned its first Division I victory with a 3-0 road win (25-17, 25-17, 25-19) at Quinnipiac University at Burt Kahn Court on Wednesday night.
With the victory, the River Hawks improve to 1-4 on the season, while Quinnipiac falls to 1-3 overall.
"I am very excited for this group, they played really hard and they wanted this win," said Head Coach Resa Provanzano. "The thing I am most excited about is how disciplined they stayed and every point they played it like it was 0-0, they never got ahead of themselves and stayed with the game plan."
Senior outside hitter Ella Merrill (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) led the team with a match-high 14 kills to go along with a .462 hitting percentage and 10 digs, while classmate Anisa Smith (Moraga, Calif.) chipped in with 10 kills. Merrill clinched the match in the third set with a kill to give the River Hawks the victory.
Junior setter Kylee Chun (Las Vegas, Nevada) finished the match with 29 assists quarterbacking the River Hawks offense. Senior libero Hannah Rey (San Diego, Calif.) finished the night with a match-high 18 digs leading the UMass Lowell defense.
The River Hawks hit at a .303 clip in the third set with 15 kills and notched 14 kills in the opening frame.
UMass Lowell returns to action on Friday, Sept. 5 at the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational. The River Hawks kick things off at 11am against host Duquesne.
