Smithfield, R.I. – The UMass Lowell women's volleyball team was defeated in two matches in the final day of the Bryant Invitational at the Chace Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.
The River Hawks fell to St. John's (3-0) in their third match of the weekend (18-25, 12-25, 15-25) and lost
the final match of the tournament to Army (3-0) by scores of 12-25, 18-25 and 18-25. UMass Lowell falls to 0-4 on the season with the losses.
"We faced two talented teams today that were big and physical, but I am please with some of the improvements we made," said Head Coach
Resa Provanzano. "We showed a lot of fight and have a nice foundation to build on. Now its time to get back to work."
In the early match vs. the Red Storm, senior outside hitter
Ella Merrill (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) led the River Hawks' offense with 10 kills, a pristine .421 hitting percentage and four digs. Junior
Kylee Chun (Las Vegas, Nevada) tallied 19 assists quarterbacking the UMass Lowell offense, while senior libero
Hannah Rey (San Diego, Calif.) capped off a great weekend with 11 digs on the afternoon.
In the late match vs. the Black Knights, Merrill again led the way for UMass Lowell with eight kills and Rey finished with a team-high 12 digs on defense. Merrill was the lone River Hawk selected to the Bryant All-Tournament Team, finishing the weekend with 38 kills (2.9 kills per set), to go along with 21 digs and three blocks.
UMass Lowell is back in action on Wednesday, September 3rd at Quinnipiac (7 p.m.).
