Freshman Raz Bracha (Irvine, Calif.) and senior Garrett Cole (Bedford, N.H.) combined to pitch the sixth no-hitter in UMass Lowell history, but came up on the wrong end of the score as the River Hawks fell, 1-0, to Yale today in New Haven, Conn. at Yale Field.

The tough luck, non-conference, loss dropped the UMass Lowell record to 8-3 overall, while the Bulldogs improve to 6-5.

Yale manufactured the only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Green Campbell was hit-by-a pitch with one out. He advanced to second on an infield error and eventually moved to third on a wild pitch.  When Brent Lawson laid down a well-executed squeeze bunt on the first base line Campbell crossed the plate.

"We pitched well," said Head Coach Ken Harring, "We threw a no-hitter and lost."

The last no-hitter by a River Hawk was by Vinny DePierro against St. Michael's on April 12, 2011, seven innings. The last nine inning no- hitter came back on May 14, 1977 when Matt Fitzgerald no-hit Springfield.

Bracha took the loss and fell to 1-1 on the season. He pitched six innings, struck out one and walked one, while allowing the only run of the game. Cole kept Yale bats quiet over the final two innings.  He did not allow a hit and struck out one.

The River Hawks did not go down without a fight.

The River Hawks came within inches from tying the game when junior Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.) was thrown out at the plate while trying to score from second on a two-out single by Matt Mottola (Newburyport, Mass.)

UMass Lowell had, earlier in the game, threatened to break the scoreless tie. In the visitors' half of the fifth inning, Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.) walked to load the bases with two outs. Junior shortstop Danny Mendick (Rochester, N.Y.) drilled a 0-1 pitch straight to third for the third out of the inning.
Harring said, "We didn't get the big hit we need today."

Yale starter Chris Lanham had seven strikeouts and gave up four hits in five innings of work and earned the win to improve to 3-0. Chasen Ford Chris Moates each threw two innings in relief. Moates picked up his first save of the season.

Junior Matthew Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) went 2-for-4 on the day.

UMass Lowell will spend the weekend in Williamsburg, VA. The River Hawks battle The College of William and Mary on Friday. They then play Brown on Saturday and Sunday.
