The UMass Lowell softball team suffered another gut-wrenching loss in extra innings, falling to Youngstown State this time, 5-4 in 8 innings.

The River Hawks (1-11) held one run leads in the top of the sixth and in the eighth, but couldn't hang on despite strong plate appearances from Arianna Darcy (Wallkill, N.Y.) and Ally Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.).

"(Darcy and Greene) have played well in our last four games," said Head Coach Sean Cotter. "Ari is a slow starter, so it's good that she is starting to hit with power and Greene keeps having great AB's!

The pair combined for three hits and all four of the teams five RBI, while Darcy picked up her first home run of the year, hitting a leadoff homer in the sixth to center.

UMass Lowell opened the scoring in the third, courtesy of a two RBI singles up the middle by Greene, which brought home Alisha Welch (Langley, British Columbia) and Tori Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.).

The Penguins improve their record to 9-7 as YSU's Jordan Macey did most of the heavy lifting, pitching seven innings and striking out 11. Kayla Haslett got the win, pitching a one-hit eighth inning.

For the River Hawks, sophomore Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) went five innings, giving up two runs and striking out six before being replaced by Lauren Ramirez (Dracut, Mass.) who picked up her third loss on the season.

UMass Lowell continues in the Coppin State Tournament tomorrow playing Mount St. Mary (7-8-1) at 11:15 a.m. and La Salle (3-7) at 6 p.m.
