River Hawks Split Doubleheader to Begin 2014 Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The UMass Lowell softball team split their season opening doubleheader at the Hampton Inn of Dunn Invitational on Friday night. The River Hawks rallied back from a six run deficit to pull out a 8-7 victory over tournament host Campbell before suffering a 13-1 loss at the hands of Seton Hall.

In the first game against the Fighting Camels, the River Hawks trailed by five entering the top of the second inning and were down six after three innings but displayed their resiliency ripping off six runs of their own in the sixth inning. Melissa King (Stamford, Conn.) got things going with a two-run single and would come around to score on a double by Emily O'Brien (Salem, N.H.) following a wild pitch by Campbell pitcher Katie Baker.

Senior Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) scored the winning run in the top of the seventh on a fielders choice after Alyssa Zinkiewicz (Massapequa, N.Y.) reached on an error.

King and O'Brien each finished the game with two RBI's.

In the back end of the double header, River Hawks freshman pitcher Erica Armenti (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was chased after an inning and a third of work, letting up six earned runs on six hits.

The River Hawks couldn't find the same magic to comeback against the Pirates as Seton Hall scored 13 runs on 14 hits.  UMass Lowell mustered their lone run on a double by Brianna Martin who brought in Ferraro. Martin's double was one of four hits generated by the River Hawks.

UMass Lowell plays two more at the invitational starting wiith the University of Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne at 1 P.M. and 10 A.M. Sunday morning against Valparaiso University.
