River Hawks split pair of matches in season finale

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The UMass Lowell women's volleyball team went 1-1 in pair of matches at the Grand Canyon Reclassification Tournament on Saturday in the season finale at Antelope Gymnaisum.
The River Hawks opened the day with a 3-0 loss (20-25, 23-25, 22-25) to NJIT and then followed that up with a straight sets victory (25-20, 25-23, 25-22) in the second match of the day against Incarnate Word.
UMass Lowell ends its second season in Division I with a 4-29 overall record and a 1-11 record in America East play.
In the early match vs. the Highlanders, senior outside hitter Ella Merrill (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) and freshman outside hitter Masha Yelsukova (Santa Clara, Calif.) led the River Hawks' offense with 10 kills apiece. Yelsukova recorded a team-high .368 hitting percentage for UMass Lowell, while Merill hit at a .286 clip. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Bennett (Wilmington, Mass.) chipped in with five kills and four total blocks in the losing effort. Junior setter Kylee Chun (Las Vegas, Nevada) amassed 21 assists running the River Hawks' offense.
In the late match against the Cardinals, senior middle blocker Anisa Smith (Moraga, Calif.) finished off her River Hawk career with a team-high 10 kills and a .588 hitting percentage. Bennett also turned in another solid effort with nine kills, .500 hitting percentage and four more blocks. Merrill also added nine kills in the match vs. the Cardinals. Chun notched 26 digs and senior libero Hannah Rey (San Diego, Calif.) registered eight digs. Rey finished the season with 551 digs, the second highest total in a single-season, which fell 11 digs short of the school record. UMass Lowell totaled 15 kills in the opening set (.367 hit%) and 11 kills (.323) in the final set.
Smith was named to the Grand Canyon All-Tournament team for her efforts over the four matches, posting 23 kills, 17 digs and four blocks on the weekend for the River Hawks.
It marked the final match in the collegiate careers of Smith, Merrill, Rey and senior setter Kamiren Humphrey (Tucson, Ariz.).
