LOWELL, Mass. –
Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) and
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) swept the America East men's soccer awards, as announced by the conference Monday afternoon.
Fernandes was named the Player of the Week thanks to his one goal and two assists this past week.
His goal came against NJIT on October 22 to tie the game in the 61st minute. Fernandes gathered a pass from
Guilherme Desousa (Everett, Mass.) and let go a shot from 35-yards out, as he was falling down, that snuck over the head of the keeper and into the back of the net.
Fernandes' two assists came in the 2-1 win against Binghamton on Oct 25. In the 11th minute he dribbled down the sideline and turned to go across the end line. Right before the keeper came out to cut him off, Fernandes sent a cross to
Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.), who had an open net for the goal.
His second assist came on the game-winning goal when he headed a corner into the box that
Austin Kimball (Exeter, N.H.) put off his head and into the net.
Fernandes ranks third in the conference in points (12) and goals (5).
For the third time this season, and second straight week,
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) has been named the America East Rookie of the Week.
Kroll made six saves in the NJIT game and although he recorded only one save against Binghamton, it was on a breakaway attempt with the game tied at 1-1.
Kroll's 79 saves lead the conference and sits 12 ahead of his closest competition. His saves per game average of 4.94 also ranks first.
The River Hawks are riding a five-game unbeaten streak, including a three-game winning streak. They look to continue to momentum with a road contest at New Hampshire on November 1 at 12 p.m.
