LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell men's soccer team battled its way to a 0-0 tie in double overtime against the University of Vermont Catamounts on Wednesday evening.
The Catamounts had most of the quality opportunities in the first half, but
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) stopped all four shots he faced. The River Hawks (4-8-1, 1-1-1) did earn more corner kicks in the first 45 minutes, holding a 5-1 advantage.
Vermont (6-5-2, 1-1-1) had the first big chance in the second half, coming in the 60th minute, but Kroll made a point-blank save off of Brian Wright about eight yards out.
In the late stages of the second half UMass Lowell applied its best pressure of the game and had back-to-back scoring opportunities. In the 72nd minute
Bryan Amaris (West Haven, Conn.) received the ball all alone in the left side of the box but his shot towards the far post was knocked aside by Conor Leland.
Off the ensuing corner kick
Jay Marchand (North Andover, Mass.) sent a low shot that beat the keeper, but a UVM defender was there to clear the ball of the line.
The River Hawks outshot the Catamounts 4-0 in the first overtime period, but the visitors had the better chances in the final 10 minutes.
In the 103rd minute, Jackson Dayton fired off a shot that Kroll saved but the rebound hit the post and came up to Eamon Kiston. Kiston couldn't get a dangerous shot off, but Kroll smothered any opportunity.
UMass Lowell outshot the guests 16-14,
Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) led the home team with four shots and Wright lead Vermont with three. The River Hawks had 10 corner kicks to UVM's two.
Kroll earned his second-straight blank sheet with six saves, and the Catatmounts' Leland made four saves.
UMass Lowell returns to action with a road contest against Stony Brook on October 18 at 7 p.m.
