Kevin Zapata (Medellin, Colombia) and freshman
Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) scored in either half to lead the UMass Lowell men's soccer team over Sacred Heart University, 2-0, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference clash at the Campus Field.
With the victory, UMass Lowell improved to 2-7-0 and visits Hartwick Tuesday at 7:00. Sacred Heart fell to 3-6-0 overall and hosts the University of Rhode Island next Saturday at 7:00.
Senior GK
Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) stopped all seven shots he faced en route to his first shutout of the season. Sacred Heart outshot the River Hawks 16-13 overall, but shots on target were even at 7-7.
"I think the guys are beginning to understand what it's going to take for us to win each game going forward, to not fall into a hole early," said Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "Scoring early put us in a much better position to win today, and our guys are beginning to understand that."
UMass Lowell jumped ahead in the fifth minute when junior F
Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) took a pass from senior
M Dan Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.), beat the offside trap and crossed to Zapata who volleyed home on the run.
The goal was Zapata's second in his last three matches. Morais, additionally, has had a hand in seven of UMass Lowell's 12 goals this season.
He also set up Fernandes' goal in the 75
th. Morais found Fernandes on the left flank, who ran at the defense, cut back at the corner of the 18 and curled right-footed into upper right 90.
Sophomore GK Tucker Hackett stopped six shots for Sacred Heart.
