Early Goals Lift Fairfield Over UMass Lowell

Zapata, Morais combine for goal; at Sacred Heart Saturday

FAIRFIELD, CONN. (Sept. 24, 2013) – UMass Lowell surrendered a pair of goals in the opening 11 minutes and was unable to recover in a 3-1 loss at Fairfield Tuesday night in a non-conference men's soccer clash at Lessing Field.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 1-7-0 overall and return to Fairfield, Conn. Saturday for a 1:00 match at Sacred Heart University.

Fairfield earned its third straight win and improved to 3-1-1. The Stags host LIU-Brooklyn Saturday at 7:30.

UMass Lowell outshot Fairfield 13-10 overall – including nine shots by junior M Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) – and 7-4 on target, but was only able to capitalize once.

Fairfield took a 1-0 lead just 1:52 into the match after UMass Lowell was whistled for a foul on the left side even with the 18-yard box. Junior M Jake Zuniga whipped a free kick to senior M Daniel Shaw who volleyed home.

The Stags doubled their lead in the 11th minute against the run of play. A clearance by freshman GK Joe Martin sailed into UMass Lowell's defensive third where junior F Jordan Ayis centered to senior F Reco McLaren just inside the box, who slotted in from eight yards out.

Fairfield put the match out of reach in the 51st minute when freshman B Martin Lindgren intercepted an errant pass deep in the River Hawk zone and lofted over senior GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) from 30 yards out.

Senior M Kevin Zapata (Medellin, Colombia) gave UMass Lowell a lifeline in the 63rd minute. Morais broke free down the right side, rounded a defender and centered to Zapata, who slotted home left-footed at the near post.

Martin stopped six shots for Fairfield while Maierle had one save for the River Hawks.
