Emmett O'Connor scored in the 85th minute as St. Bonaventure University men's soccer scratched out a 3-2 victory over UMass Lowell, Friday afternoon, at McGraw-Jennings Field.

The loss was the third in a row for the River Hawks whose record drops to 1-7-0.  St. Bonaventure improves to 6-2-0.

"We made a couple of mistakes and we paid the price," said Head Coach Christian Figueroa.  "We've got to focus on the details and we've got to be sharp."

The River Hawks got goals from senior Kyle Garvan (Braintree, Mass.) and freshman Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde), one per half.

Garvan's goal in the 11th minute of play tied the game at one.  It was off a set piece.  Garvan headed the ball into the net off a corner kick by senior Kevin Zapata (Medellin, Colombia).

"(Garvan) broke free and got his head on it," said Figueroa.  "It was a strong kick and he did a good job redirecting it on frame."

Fernandes goal in the 79th minute, beating a defender before putting the ball inside the near post, brought UMass Lowell even for a second time.

The River Hawks were never able to grab a lead.

"We had the opportunities, we just didn't finish them off," said Figueroa.  "We're creating chances, but we've got to get better in the final third of the field."

In addition to the O'Connor score, the Bonnies got two goals from Brad Beaumont.

UMass Lowell had a shooting edge in the contest, 8-6, but the home team put six on the River Hawk net to four for the visitors.  River Hawk senior goalkeeper Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N. Y.) had three saves.  His opposite number, Jeremy Figler had two.

UMass Lowell returns to action Tuesday, September 24th, when they visit Fairfield University.
