Box Score

NEW BRITAIN, CONN. (Sept. 18, 2013) – Senior F Eddy Boyle scored the lone goal in the second half as Central Connecticut State defeated UMass Lowell, 1-0, Wednesday night in a non-conference men's soccer clash at the CCSU Soccer Field.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 1-5-0 overall and visits St. Bonaventure Friday at 4:30. Central Connecticut improved to 1-4-1 and visits Stony Brook Sunday at 2:00.

CCSU broke the drought in the 76th minute, which followed a series of close chances. Sophomore Zach Zurita launched a corner kick from the right side which Boyle headed home. Leading up to the goal, the Blue Devils kept the UMass Lowell on the defensive with three corner kicks and two shots on target, both denied by senior G Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.).

The Blue Devils continued to pressure and nearly doubled their lead on the next sequence. A shot by Zurita was saved by Maierle, but freshman B Neekoli Calderon's header off the ensuing cross after the failed clearance was just over the bar.

UMass Lowell put together a good spell in the 80th minute. Freshman M Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) broke free off a through-ball from junior F Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.), deked a defender, but his attempt was deflected by an oncoming defender. Fernandes headed the rebound to Morais, but his shot was cleared off the line and safely out of play.

CCSU outshot UMass Lowell 16-13 overall (7-4 on target) and enjoyed a 12-4 advantage on corner kicks. Maierle had six saves for the River Hawks while junior G Josef Abele stopped four shots.
