Women’s Soccer: River Hawks outmuscled in Cleveland

Cleveland State Tops UMass Lowell, 2-0

Box Score

Cleveland State University scored goals in each half en route to a 2-0 victory over UMass Lowell, Friday night in a physical non conference match at Krenzler Soccer Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

The loss is the fifth straight for the River Hawks who are still looking for their first win of the season. For the Cleveland State Vikings, the win was their third of the season and halted a four game losing streak.

"It was a really physical game and we never really coped with that," said Head Coach Elie Monteiro. "It's on us to adjust, we've got to learn."

The home team jumped on top in the 36th minute of play off a set piece. Frederike DuBeau got the goal with a header assisted by Amanda Sivic.

The Vikings got some insurance in the 48th minute; Sarah Kaiser converted a pass from Vickie Havas, 2-0.

"They got two very good goals," said Monteiro. "You've got to tip your hat to them; it was not our best performance."

Junior GK Jill Carlson (Lexington, Mass.) made six saves for the River Hawks, who were outshot 8-2 on target and 18-7 overall.

UMass Lowell remains on the road and returns to action Sunday, at 1:00pm, at Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Ct.

"(Being on the road) a good experience, it's a difference experience for us," says Monteiro. "We have to adjust to the road, the officials and the surface. We've got to continue to learn."
