Senior F Evan Jimmo scored the lone goal in overtime as Stetson University defeated UMass Lowell, 1-0, Friday night in a season-opening men's soccer clash in Deland, Fla.

The match was UMass Lowell's first as an NCAA Division I institution and part of a two-match swing over the weekend. The River Hawks (0-1) visit Florida Atlantic University Sunday at 1:00.

Stetson visits the University of South Florida Monday at 7:30.

The match, which began at 5:00, was delayed nearly two hours midway through the second half due to lightning.

Stetson scored the winner 1:05 into overtime when senior F Evan Jimmo took the rebound off and fired from the left side of the box into the upper right corner of the goal.

Stetson outshot UMass Lowell 14-9 overall and 5-1 on target. The River Hawks, however, posted an 11-3 edge on corner kicks, including 8-0 in the second half.

Senior GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) stopped four shots while Stetson Andreas Schnabl had one save.

UMass Lowell had several chances, its best midway through the first half. Senior M Kevin Zapata (Medellin, Colombia) steered a corner which was cleared by a Stetson defender to freshman Eric Martin (Danvers, Mass.), who slotted wide seven yards out from the far post.

Just before the delay, Zapata served an inswinging corner to senior M Kyle Garvan (Braintree, Mass.) whose sliding attempt at the back post was a shade late.

Garvan nearly created a goal late in the second half when his long throw-in went to senior B Alex Sindoni (Haverhill, Mass.) off a flick, who headed agonizingly over the bar.
