Baseball: UMass Lowell Edges Southern New Hampshire, 4-3

UMass Lowell got some early offense and timely pitching in Sunday’s 4-3 win over Southern New Hampshire.

Sophomore Matthew Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) capped off a three-run first inning with a two-RBI single as UMass Lowell defeated Southern New Hampshire 4-3 at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass. on Sunday afternoon.

The win brought UMass Lowell to 27-18 overall on the season and 8-9 in the Northeast Division of the Northeast-10 Conference.

The loss dropped Southern New Hampshire to 31-14 overall on the season and 12-7 in conference play.

UMass Lowell held its 3-0 lead over the Penmen until the fourth inning when Riley Palmer lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. Greg Pezzuto scored on the sacrifice and cut the UMass Lowell lead to 3-1.

Southern New Hampshire would add another run in the sixth, but this time, UMass Lowell responded in the home half of the inning when senior James Katsiroubas (Milton, Mass.) hit a single back to the pitcher, scoring sophomore Kelly Rooney (Upton, Mass.) and giving the River Hawks a 4-2 lead.

Southern New Hampshire added a single run in the ninth to draw within one run, but senior Tyler Toyfair (Agawam, Mass.) closed the door and gave UMass Lowell the 4-3 win.

Sophomore Shane Beauchemin (Manchester, N.H.) improved to 8-0 on the season with the win. Beauchemin pitched eight innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out seven.

Toyfair picked up a save for the River Hawks.

Tyler Gauthier took the loss for the Penmen. Gauthier pitched five and a third innings and allowed four runs on six hits.
