Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.) hit a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning as the UMass Lowell River Hawks came away with a dramatic comeback win over Saint Anselm on Wednesday afternoon in Manchester, N.H.
The win puts UMass Lowell at 19-18 overall on the season and 9-3 in the Northeast Division of the Northeast-10 Conference. The win put UMass Lowell over the .500 mark for the first time this season.
With the loss, Saint Anselm fell to 15-16 overall on the season and 9-3 in the Northeast Division of the Northeast-10 Conference.
Saint Anselm broke a scoreless tie in the home half of the third inning when Monique Gauthier singled through the left side of the infield, plating the first run of the game and giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
After holding UMass Lowell scoreless in the fourth, the Hawks added another run in the fourth when Nicole Boucher legged out a triple with a runner on base, upping the Saint Anselm lead to 2-0.
The score would remain at 2-0 until the sixth inning when sophomore
Melissa King (Stamford, Conn.) came through with a clutch two-run homerun over the center field fence, tying the game at two and giving the River Hawks some late game momentum.
UMass Lowell carried that momentum into the top of the seventh when the River Hawks took the lead on an RBI single by sophomore
Ariana Darcy (Wallkill, N.Y.).
Leading 3-2, Jamieson delivered the knockout punch when the team's leading batter launched a two-run blast to center, increasing the River Hawk lead to 5-2.
The Hawks tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the River Hawks were able to get the final three outs and come away with the 5-3 victory.
Freshman
Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) gained the win for UMass Lowell. Handley pitched seven innings and allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out six.
Paige Cormier took the loss for Saint Anselm. Cormier tossed six and two thirds innings and allowed five runs on 11 hits while striking out four.
Ariana Darcy and junior
Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) each drew closer to the 100-career hits mark. Darcy had two hits in the game to bring her total to 95 and Ferraro notched her 99
th career hit.
