Saint Anselm Rallies late to Top UMass Lowell

Errors prove costly in 6-3 loss

Garrett Cole retired 15 batters in a row until defensive miscues proved to be his undoing.
Box Score

Saint Anselm scored four times in the eighth inning and added a run in the ninth to defeat UMass Lowell, 6-3, Sunday afternoon, at LeLacheur Park.

The loss drops UMass Lowell's record to 19-14-1 overall, 2-5-1 in the Northeast Division of the Northeast-10 Conference. Saint Anselm improves to 15-19-1, 4-7.

Two errors opened a door the River Hawks, leading 3-1 at the time, were unable to close.  The fielding miscues put runners on first and second with nobody out in the eighth inning.  Rob Kelly followed with a single to load the bases.  Mike Hayden drove two, to tie the game, in with a double.  Dan Legasse untied it with a two run triple. 5-3.

The visitors added an insurance run in the ninth and again an error play a key role.  The defensive mishap put the lead off man on.  He eventually scored on a Hayden single.

Hayden had two hits and four RBIs.

The day had started well for UMass Lowell.  The River Hawks banged out six hits and pushed three runs across the plate in the first two innings.

Sophomore centerfielder Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) open the home first with a single and came around to score one out later in a senior James Katsiroubas (Milton, Mass.) triple.  Katsiroubas scored on a two out single by senior Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.)

DeGroot was the catalyst again in the second inning.  He singled with two outs and scored on a freshman Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.) triple.

The River Hawks had a 3-0 lead, but would be unable to add to it.  UMass Lowell could only muster only three more hits in the ball game.  Saint Anselm pitchers did issue a couple of walks and there was an error, but the home team was unable to take advantage as it hit into three double plays.

Junior Garrett Cole (Bedford, N. H.) was the tough luck loser.  After giving up a run and stranding five runners on base in the first two-plus innings, the righthander settled into a groove and retired 15 batters in a row before two eighth inning error proved to be his undoing.

Cole went seven innings and was charged with three earned runs.  He allowed five hits, walked three and struck out three.  The loss drops his record to a misleading 1-6.

Senior Tyler Toyfair (Agawam, Mass.) allowed an unearned run in his two innings of relief work.  He allowed two hits, walked two and struck out two.  He did allow two inherited runners to score.

DeGroot and Devlin each had two hits in the ball game.

The River Hawks return to action on Tuesday evening when they host Stonehill at 7:00pm at LeLacheur Park.
