Baseball: UMass Lowell Splits Doubleheader With Saint Anselm

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
UMass Lowell's offense erupted to score seven runs in the sixth inning to capture a 7-0 win in the nightcap to salvage a split over Saint Anselm College in a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.  The Hawks won a 5-3 decision in the matinee contest.

UMass Lowell's record improves to 19-13-1 overall and 2-4-1 in conference action.  Saint Anselm's record improves to 14-19-1 and 3-7 in the NE-10.

In game one, the Hawks took a 3-0 lead in the top half of the third inning courtesy of a pair of RBI singles from freshman C Allan McQuarrie  and senior 2B Richie Manzi.  The third run was scored on a passed ball that allowed Tito Lluberes, who had reached with a single to left field, to come home from third.

The River Hawks evened the score with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth.  Sophomore C Jacob O'Keefe (Wellington, Fla.) drove in the first run with a double to left field that drove in sophomore LF Matt Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) from third.  Sophomore SS Kelly Rooney (Upton, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored sophomore DH Sam Johnson (Wakefield, R.I.) from third.  The final run of the inning was tacked on with a single to left off the bat of freshman RF Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.).

Saint Anselm reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Lluberes and added an insurance run in the eight with an RBI single from DH Kyle Grumoli.

David Kent picked up his fifth win of the season after pitching seven full innings and surrendering three runs on six hits with five strikeouts.  William O'Connor came in the eighth and pitched two shutout innings for his first save of the season.

Lluberes, Grumoli, McQuarrie and Joe Morin led the Hawks at the plate with two hits each.
Senior Taylor Robinson (Haverhill, Mass.) took the loss after giving up two earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out two batters.

Sophomore 1B Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.) led the River Hawks with two hits.

In game two, both teams were playing shutout baseball until the sixth inning when UMass Lowell's bats woke up to drive in seven runs on four hits, beginning with a two RBI double from Sanchez that scored sophomore 3B Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Ricoy.  O'Keefe added another RBI to his day with a double to left field that scored Sanchez.  Senior 2B James Katsiroubas (Milton, Mass.) earned an RBI when he was hit by an errant pitch to score the fourth run of the inning before Ricoy hit a bases-loaded double to left center to drive in the final runs of the game.

Sophomore P Shane Beauchemin (Manchester, N.H.) went the distance and pitched a complete shutout, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out six to improve his record to 6-0.

Ricoy batted 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored while Sanchez was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
P Tom Hudon was charged with the loss after giving up three runs on four hits in five innings pitched.  Grimoli led the Hawks with a pair of hits.
