Late Runs Lift Franklin Pierce Over UMass Lowell, 4-2/6-3

River Hawks open at home Monday vs. Assumption

Franklin Pierce scored five runs in the eighth inning of the second game to defeat UMass Lowell, 4-2 and 6-3, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division twin bill at Pappas Field.

With the losses, UMass Lowell slipped to 12-9 overall and 0-2 in the NE-10 Northeast Division while Franklin Pierce improved to 15-9 overall and 5-0 in the Northeast Division.

UMass Lowell opens at home with a twin bill against Assumption Monday at 3:00.

In the nightcap, sophomore SS Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and senior 2B James Katsiroubas (Milton, Mass.) each hit RBI singles to break a 1-1 deadlock and give the River Hawks a 3-1 lead in the seventh inning.

Franklin Pierce, however, erupted for five runs in the eighth. Sophomore DH Matt Walsh drew a walk with the bases loaded and senior RF Nick LaCroix and junior 1B Zach Mathieu reached home when sophomore Matt O'Herron reached on an error.

Junior C Marty Dunlap added an RBI single and freshman 2B Rich Patrizio had an RBI double to compete the rally.

Junior P Mike Calzetta (Lawrence, Mass.) took the loss to slip to 1-1. Calzetta (1-1) surrendered three runs, three walks after replacing sophomore Shane Beauchemin (Manchester, N.H.) in the eighth inning. Beauchemin scattered six hits, one earned run and a walk while striking out four over 7.1 innings.

Freshman P Paul Covelle (1-1) earned the win for Franklin Pierce as he allowed one hit and a walk while striking out one over the final 1.1 innings.

Katsiroubas and sophomore LF Matt Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) each batted 2 for 4 to lead the River Hawks while DeGroot went 2-5.

In the opener, Franklin Pierce battled back from a 0-2 deficit with two runs in the sixth and two more unearned in the eighth for the win. In the sixth, junior OF Calvin Graves scored on a fielder's choice and Mathieu later followed on a throwing error to knot the score 2-2.

In the eighth, LaCroix doubled to score Mathieu, who reached on an error, and sophomore LF John Razzino later singled to score LaCroix.

UMass Lowell jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind an RBI double in the third inning from Katsiroubas which scored DeGroot; and an RBI single by sophomore Sam Johnson (Wakefield, R.I.), which drove in sophomore 1B Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.).

The loss spoiled an otherwise solid outing by senior P Taylor Robinson (Haverhill, Mass.), who slipped to 2-1. Robinson allowed five hits, one earned run and a walk while striking out eight over 7.1 innings.

Junior P Ryan Leach improved to 1-3 as he allowed no hits, runs or walks while striking out six over the final three innings.
