Baseball: River Hawks Struggle in Ocean State

UMass Lowell loses 10-0 to Division I Rhode Island

Box Score Three Rhode Island pitchers kept UMass Lowell bats quiet as the River Hawks dropped a 10-0 decision to the Rams Tuesday afternoon, at Bill Beck Field, in Kingston, Rhode Island.

It was the River Hawks first game since completing their Florida trip eleven days ago and their first game against a Division I school in more than a decade.

With the loss UMass Lowell drops to 12-6, Rhode Island improves to 10-12.

UMass Lowell will return to action Friday for the first of three games against Northeast-10 Conference rival Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire.

The River Hawks managed only two hits against Ram pitchers but more importantly, after the weather induced lay off, faced live pitching.

“The goal was to get some 'live' at bats,” said UMass Lowell Coach Ken Harring.  “We competed, we just didn't hit.  It was imperative that we get some work in, and we did.”

Freshman centerfielder Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore catcher Jacob O'Keefe (Wellington, Fla.) each had a base hit, but that was it for offense.

Rhode Island push five runs across the plate in the fifth inning to break open a hard fought 2-0 ballgame.

“We were evenly matched,” says Harring, “but we didn't make plays and the rust showed.”

The Rams added three more runs in the seventh put the game out of reach.

The River Hawks, looking to get work for an overly rested pitching staff, sent six different arms to the mound.

Junior Garrett Cole (Bedford, N. H.), senior Taylor Robinson (Haverhill, Mass.), sophomore Shane Beauchemin (Manchester, N. H.) and sophomore Geoff Fisher (Londonderry, N. H.) combined to allow just one run in five innings of work.

The River Hawks get a couple of days off before heading to Rindge, N. H. for a three game series against a Franklin Pierce University ball club that is four games over .500 with a 13-9 record.   The two teams play a single game Friday, March 29, and a doubleheader on Saturday, March 30.

UMass Lowell will not play at LeLacheur Park until April 1 when they host doubleheader against Assumption College.
