River Hawks Split at Pfeiffer, 11-1, 3-7

Darcy 4-4, seven RBI in opener; MacKenzie 3-5

Sophomore CF Ariana Darcy (Walkill, N.Y.) batted 5 for 8 with seven RBI, three runs, three stolen bases and two home runs as UMass Lowell split with Pfeiffer University, winning 11-1 and falling 7-3 in the nightcap, Monday at the Catawba College Softball Tournament.

With the split, UMass Lowell currently stands at 2-4 overall and resumes action Saturday at Adelphi (12:00) and Monday at Post University (2:00). Pfeiffer is currently 5-7.

The games were the second and third of the day for the River Hawks, who opened this morning with a 5-1 loss to Catawba College.

Most of Darcy's production came in the opener as she batted 4 for 4 with seven RBI, three runs, three stolen bases and two home runs as UMass Lowell jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings.

Sophomore DH Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.) batted 3 for 3 with two runs while junior Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) went 2 for 3 with one run and a double. Senior 2B Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) hit 1 for 2 with two runs, two stolen bases, two walks and one RBI.

Freshman P Anna Crowley (Eastchester, N.Y.) scattered six hits, one earned run and no walks to earn the victory.

Junior 3B Celia Dew went 2 for 3 to lead Pfeiffer while sophomore DH Lindsey Russell batted 1 for 2 with one RBI.

Darcy opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-run shot to left center. Following an RBI single by MacKenzie in the second, Darcy belted a two-run single to centerfield to give the River Hawks a 5-0 lead.

Darcy also fueled a four-run fifth inning with a three-run home run to centerfield, shortly after Jamieson singled and later reached home on an error.

 
Pfeiffer avenged the loss in the nightcap as it emerged from a 3-3 deadlock with three runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth. In the fifth inning, Dew scored on a wild pitch and freshman 1B Jaclyn Boever followed with a sacrifice fly to score freshman Jessica Jackson.

Russell followed with an RBI double down the left field line to score freshman C Summer Pope.

UMass Lowell had runners on second and third with one out in the seventh, but was unable to capitalize.

MacKenzie batted 2 for 3 while sophomore Danielle Crutcher (Londonderry, N.H.) batted 1 for 2 with a two run single in the fourth inning to knot the score 3-3. Sophomore C Melissa King (Stamford, Conn.) scored two runs as she drew a walk and was hit by a pitch.

Freshman P Hailey Terrien (Rochdale, Mass.) took the loss as she allowed two hits, three earned runs and a walk in 1.2 innings. Terrien replaced sophomore P Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.), who scattered six hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks over the first four innings.

Dew batted 2 for 4 with three runs for Pfeiffer while freshman LF Khristin Isley also hit 2-4. Russell earned the win as she allowed three hits and two walks over after replacing freshman Jessica Griffin after 3.0 innings.
