Freshman F Justin Hussar scored the lone goal 7:40 into the third period as Merrimack College defeated No. 13/12 UMass Lowell, 1-0, Friday night in a Hockey East clash in front of 2,489 at the Lawler Arena.

The loss halted UMass Lowell's unbeaten streak at 11 games as the River Hawks slipped to 14-8-2 overall and 8-7-2 in Hockey East (entering Sunday's game at Maine (2:00).

Merrimack improved to 11-10-5 overall and 9-6-2 in Hockey East, good for sole possession of fourth place.
Despite the loss, junior G Doug Carr (Hanover, Mass.) was stellar in goal, stopping 26 of 27 shots while junior Sam Marotta had 25 saves for the Warriors.

Merrimack broke the drought 7:40 into the third period when freshman F Justin Hussar took a pass from junior F Rhett Bly in the left circle and one-timed inside the far post, past Carr, who was screened on the play.

UMass Lowell went 0 for 8 on the power play which included a 59-second 5-on-3 situation in the second period. The River Hawks also pulled Carr out of goal with 2:37 left to play, which encompassed two power plays and two 6 on 4 opportunities, to no avail.

The Warriors nearly went ahead 2-0 during the first 6-on-4 sequence when a length-of-the-ice clearance from sophomore F Clayton Jardine caromed off the left post.

“We had more than enough chances to win the game,” said head coach Norm Bazin. “It was a well played game both ways. Their GK didn't give up any rebounds and played well. I thought both goalies played equally well. We had to win on the power play and we didn't do it tonight.”

Merrimack had a 27-25 edge on shots and blocked 11 River Hawk attempts in the third period.
