3 in Double Figures as River Hawks Fall to St. Bonaventure

Guards pace River Hawks in a close loss as team looks forward to NJIT

Box Score OLEAN, N.Y. (December 3, 2013) – After a 13-2 run to take a 34-31 halftime lead the UMass Lowell men's basketball team fell to St. Bonaventure 67-58 Tuesday night at the Reilly Center.

St. Bonaventure led 29-21 with just over five minutes to go in the first half when the River Hawks went on their run which was capped off by a layup from senior guard Akeem Williams (Brockton, MA) seconds before the buzzer sounded.

Coming off the team's first win of the season, the River Hawks had three players finish in double digit scoring as Williams led the way with 17 points while junior Chad Holley (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore DJ Mlachnik (Muskego, Wisc) each added 16 points.

The loss drops the River Hawks record to 1-7 overall while St. Bonaventure improves to 6-2.

The game lacked much offensive rhythm for either team as a combined 49 fouls were called, 28 against the River Hawks and 21 against the Bonnies.

Mlachnik sank a pretty floater in the lane to give the River Hawks their first lead of the opening half at 32-31 before Williams' layup ended the half. The Bonnies responded early in the second half jumping out on a 12-4 run to reclaim the lead at 43-37.

Marquise Simmons and Andell Cumberbatch each recorded double-doubles to lead the Bonnies. Simmons finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Cumberbatch totaled 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The team didn't let up, cutting the deficit down to two points (46-44) with 11:51 to play following a contested elbow jumper from Mlachnik and a fast break layup from Williams.

Early foul trouble to the UMass frontcourt gave the Bonnies an advantage on the glass as they grabbed 46 rebounds, 21 of which were on the offensive end resulting in 19 second chance points.

Holley wrapped up the game with six assists to go with three rebounds and a steal.

UMass Lowell continues their busy week when they travel to Newark, NJ to play New Jersey Institute of Technology Saturday at 2 P.M.
