UMass Lowell nearly opened the scoring in the 10th minute when senior M Daniel Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) rifled a cross from the right side, which was punched out by UMBC goalkeeper Phil Saunders. Freshman F Eric Martin (Danvers, Mass.), however, controlled the loose ball but was unable to get a solid foot on it.

The Retrievers stormed back and nearly went ahead a minute later. Junior M Zach Wenger crossed to sophomore F Michael Scott whose header from the six-yard box was gloved over the crossbar by senior GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.).

UMass Lowell put together several good spells in the coming minutes and junior F Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) nearly broke the drought 15 minutes in. Following a foul at the top left of the box, Morais sent a low free kick around the right side of the wall which caromed off the right post.

UMBC proved dangerous thereafter and went ahead in the 23rd minute when junior M Jordan Becker crossed from the left side to Scott who headed home.

The Retrievers doubled their lead in the 35th after a UMass Lowell foul at the top right of the UMBC box. Junior M Mamadou Kansaye steered the free kick to junior B Marquez Fernandez, who eluded the defense and headed home inside the six-yard box.

Both teams had chances in the second half. Following a failed clearance off a corner kick by senior M Kevin Zapata (Medellin, Colombia), Martin possessed out of a scramble at the six-yard box, but his shot was deflected out of play.

UMBC nearly scored a third in the 62nd minute when junior M Stephen Ho went in alone on Maierle and sidefooted toward the top right corner of the goal. Senior B James Costello (West Newbury, Mass.) came on the head the shot airborne and senior B Alex Sindoni (Haverhill, Mass.) then headed out of play.

Sindoni nearly cut the lead in half in the 83rd. Senior M Adilson Lima (Leominster, Mass.) sent in a corner to senior M Kyle Garvan (Braintree, Mass.), who headed to Sindoni, but Sanders read it well and snuffed Sindoni's header at the near post.
