River Hawks Rue Missed Chances in 2-0 Loss at NJIT

Fernandes, Garvan go close; River Hawks at Binghamton Saturday

UMass Lowell outshot New Jersey Institute of Technology 6-3, but were unable to capitalize in a 2-0 loss Wednesday night in a non-conference men's soccer match at Malcolm Simon Stadium.
 
UMass Lowell slipped to 2-10 overall and visits Binghamton Saturday at 6:00. NJIT halted a three-match winless streak and improve to 5-7-1 entering next Wednesday's clash at Seton Hall.
 
NJIT opened the scoring in the ninth minute when junior D Marko Drljic was given too much space at the top of the box, took a touch and stroked home off the left post.
 
The highlanders doubled their lead in the 68th minute when sophomore F Jason Gonzalez played a deflected ball to junior F Jason Chippy, who held off a defender and slotted home from six yards out.
 
UMass Lowell had a pair of chances in the first half, the first when senior M Daniel Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) beat a defender down the left side and shot low hard across the face of the goal. Freshman M Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) was oncoming, but was unable to get a foot on it.
 
Shortly after, Fernandes' found space from the top of the box and let fly, only for junior GK Alexander Czempik to tip over.
 
UMass Lowell's best chance in the second half came in the 85th minute when Kyle Garvan (Braintree, Mass.) volleyed a corner kick on frame, but right at Czempik.
 
Senior G Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) had two saves for UMass Lowell while Czempik stopped six shots.
