Box Score

LOWELL (Oct. 5, 2013) – The University of New Hampshire broke a scoreless drought in the 66th minute to deal UMass Lowell a 1-0 loss Saturday afternoon in an America East Conference men's soccer clash at Cushing Field.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in the AEC and visits New Jersey Institute of Technology Wednesday at 7:00.

The win was UNH's third in four matches as it improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the Conference. The Wildcats, who host Brown Tuesday at 3:30, have compiled five shutouts in nine matches and rank tied for 16th among Division I shutout leaders entering the match.

UNH scored the winner in the 66th minute when senior M Byron Greenwood crossed to senior M Steven Palumbo on the left side, who centered to oncoming sophomore M Jesus Tudela who sidefooted home.

UNH nearly went ahead in the first minute when Tudela took a failed clearance at the top of the box, but shot into senior B Neil Lavanchy (Scituate, Mass.), who cleared.

Afterward, UMass Lowell put together some good spells, particularly in the first 2 minutes. In the seventh minute, freshman M Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) broke free down the left side and attempted to beat junior GK Travis Worra to the near post, but fired wide left.

Fernandes nearly put UMass Lowell ahead four minutes later with a blast from 25 yards, but Worra did well to tip over the bar.

The Wildcats had the advantage later in the half and nearly broke the scoreless deadlock in the 43rd. Tudela ran onto a through-ball alone on senior GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.), who anticipated well and smothered safely.

UMass Lowell outshot UNH 13-8 overall, but the Wildcats had a 5-2 advantage on frame. Maierle stopped three shots while Worra had two saves.
