River Hawks Suffer 3-0 Loss at Binghamton

Fernandes goes close in the 28th; River Hawks visit Albany Wednesday

VESTAL, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2013) – Freshman M Logan Roberts scored one goal and set up another to lead Binghamton University over UMass Lowell, 3-0, Friday night in an America East Conference match at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
 
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 2-11 overall and 0-2 in America East entering Wednesday's match at the University of Albany (7:00).
 
Binghamton halted a six-match winless streak and improved to 3-7-2 overall (1-1-0 in the Conference) and visits Stony Brook Wednesday at 7:00.
 
Binghamton opened the scoring in the second minute when, following a foul deep in the UMass Lowell half, junior Ben Nicholson steered the free kick over the wall inside the left post from just outside the 18-yard box.
 
UMass Lowell applied pressure and put together several good spells of possession in the coming minutes, eliciting three saves from BU goalkeeper Stefano Frantelizzi. The River Hawks' best opportunity of the half came in the 28th minute when freshman M Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) rung the crossbar with his header off a free kick from senior Kevin Zapata (Medellin, Colombia).
 
The River Hawks continued the pressure in the second half, but were unable to capitalize. The Bearcats doubled their lead against the run of play in the 69th minute when senior F Marts Reid-Warden tapped home a cross from freshman M Logan Roberts.
 
UMass Lowell threw numbers forward in the final 13 minutes and created several opportunities. Binghamton, however, struck for a third goal in the 88th minute when Roberts poked home from a header by freshman F Alex Vartsas off a free kick.
 
Shots were even at 10-10 overall and 6-6 on target. Senior GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) stopped three shots while Frantelizzi had six saves.
