Men's Soccer: Second Half Goals Lift Hartwick Over UMass Lowell, 3-1

DeSantis nets first of the season; River Hawks open AEC state Saturday against UNH

Box Score

Hartwick College scored all three goals in the second half en route to a 3-1 victory over UMass Lowell Tuesday night in a non-conference men's soccer match at the Elmore Field.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 2-8-0 overall and hosts the University of New Hampshire Saturday at 1:00 in its America East Conference opener. Hartwick improved to 2-5-2 overall and visits Akron Saturday at 7:00.

Hartwick jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals in the 50th and 68th minutes. The Hawks took a 1-0 lead when sophomore M Nick Hills took a pass from sophomore M Marc Russell and capitalized on too much space and rifled home from just inside the top of the box.

Hartwick doubled its lead 19 minutes later when senior GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) stopped an initial attempt by senior B Will Bromfield, but Bromfield slotted home the rebound.

Junior F Eric DeSantis (Woburn, Mass.) gave the River Hawks a lifeline in the 83rd minute with help from senior M Kyle Garvan (Braintree, Mass.) and senior B Alex Sindoni (Haverhill, Mass.). Sindoni flicked on a long throw-in by Garvan to DeSantis, who poked through a crowd in the box.

Hopes of a draw were dashed in the 90th minute when a free kick from freshman M Jamie O'Grady at the top of the box, took a deflection off UMass Lowell's wall which left Maierle no chance.

The Hawks outshot UMass Lowell 18-7 overall and 10-4 on frame. Maierle had five saves while junior Mateo Munarriz stopped two shots.
