Senior
Craig Bennett (Milton, Mass.) won the 200 meter dash while junior
Keith Lewis (Nashua, N.H.) won the 400 meters to lead the UMass Lowell men's track and field team at the Roxbury Community College Tiger Open Saturday night at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletics Center.
The non-scoring meet drew athletes and schools from all three NCAA divisions as well as many athletes representing postgraduate track and field clubs from New England.
Bennett captured the 200 meters in 22.73 seconds, edging runner-up Henry Morales of UMass Boston (22.91).
Lewis was the sole entry in the 400 meters to break 50 seconds as he posted a time of 49.86 seconds, just ahead of Michael Galasso of Holy Cross (50.01). Junior
Vladimir Francois (North Attleboro, Mass.) placed ninth in 52.75.
UMass Lowell did particularly well in the throws as three River Hawks placed among the top four places in the shot put. Freshman
Nicholas Staub (Dracut, Mass.) placed second with a toss of 46' 7.5'' while junior
Devin O'Neil (Braintree, Mass.) took third with a throw of 44' 8.0''; and sophomore
Zachary Nardone (Peabody, Mass.) fourth with a distance of 44' 4.25''.
O'Neil and Nardone also took third and fourth in the weight throw, O'Neil with an effort of 47' 11.0'' and Nardone right behind with a toss of 47' 10.0''.
Freshman
Oluwatoni Onikeku (Fitchburg, Mass.) placed third in the high jump as he cleared 6' 4.75''. Junior
Chanra Chhean (Lowell, Mass.) also had a third place finish in the pole vault, clearing 13' 0.0''.
Junior
Cameron Mitchell (Wakefield, Mass.) placed fourth in the 55 meter hurdles and led three River Hawks among the top eight. Mitchell posted a time of 8.13 seconds while Lewis was fourth in 8.15 and Francois eighth in 8.36.
Mitchell also took eighth in the 55 meter dash in 6.86 seconds.
In other events, sophomore
Oluwadam Dada (Lowell, Mass.) placed fourth overall and second among collegiate athletes in the triple jump with a distance of 41' 10.75''. Sophomore
Patrick Greaney (Mansfield, Mass.) placed fourth in the long jump (20' 6.25'').
UMass Lowell enters the Tufts Jumbo Invitational next Saturday.
