UMass Lowell, Dowling Battle to 1-1 Deadlock

Galvin scores in opener; River Hawks host Merrimack Wednesday

Junior Bruno Bonicontro is felled by Dowling defender Lasse Schanche.
Box Score
Junior F Daniel Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) scored in the 57th minute and Dowling College leveled a minute later as the two rivals opened the season with a 1-1 draw Wednesday afternoon in the 2012 men's soccer season opener at Cushing Field.

UMass Lowell (0-0-1) opens its Northeast-10 Conference schedule Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Merrimack College, the second of four straight home games to open the season and seven at Cushing in the month of September.

Dowling (0-0-1) visits Le Moyne Saturday at 1:00.

Galvin broke the drought in the 57th minute when he took a throw-in on the right side from junior M Kyle Garvan (Braintree, Mass.), turned, found space and blasted inside the far post.

On the next succession, however, Dowling's senior F Kariym Balthazar (Point Fortin, Trinidad) penetrated down the right of the box and pulled back for freshman M Geir Olav Helgoey (Stavanger, Norway) who tucked inside the left post from just inside the top of the box.

UMass Lowell outshot Dowling 19-11 overall and 8-6 on target, and also built a 12-2 edge on corner kicks. Junior GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) had four saves while freshman GK Chris Friedl (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) stopped seven shots.

Both teams had chances to score as Dowling nearly opened the scoring 14 minutes in. Off a long throw-in, freshman B Jon Burch's (Farnham, England) sidefoot had Maierle beat, but junior B Neil Lavanachy (Scituate, Mass.) was there to clear off the line. Lavanchy's clearance went right to Balthazar, who headed wide.

Immediately after, Galvin broke free down the left side of the box, but his attempt was parried over by Friedl. In the 32nd minute, a no-look header by junior Alex Sindoni (Haverhill, Mass.) off a throw-in nearly found the top right corner of the goal, but Friedl gloved wide.

Galvin had a chance three minutes into the first overtime on a similar play to his goal, but this time Friedl gloved wide and Dowling cleared. The Golden Lions nearly won it two minutes later when junior B Joseph Henton (Leicester, England) headed wide off cross, eliciting a diving stop by Maierle.

Dowling also had the best chance in the second overtime when a long throw eluded the grasp of Maierle and went to senior M Sean Dougherty (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), who tapped wide.
