White, 4X400 Team leads River Hawks at George Davis Invitational

White wins 100 meters in 10.62 seconds; 4X400 hits NCAA provision

Junior Evan White (Tewksbury, Mass.) won the 100 meter dash and ran a leg on the winning 4X400 meter relay team to lead the UMass Lowell men's track & field team at the George Davis Invitational Saturday at the Cushing Field Complex.

The non-scoring Invitational showcased teams from all three NCAA divisions as well as many postgraduate athletes.

White ran the 100 meters in 10.62 seconds and edged John Spooney of Brown, the runner-up in 10.65.

White also led the UMass Lowell's 4X400 team to first place in 3:14.18, just ahead of UMass Lowell's 'B' team which took second in 3:17.80. Along with White was junior Craig Bennett (Milton, Mass.), freshman Ryad Bencheikh (Woburn, Mass.) and senior Jeff Wundt (Southwick, Mass.).

The 'A' team's result made the NCAA provisional list and currently stands 19th in the country.

The 4X4 'B' team was led by sophomores Casey O'Brien (Seekonk, Mass.), Tim Regan (Sandwich, Mass.), David Brown (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Tunde Ogunleye (Fitchburg, Mass.).

Regan, O'Brien, Ogunleye and freshman Kevin Johnston (Amesbury, Mass.) also led UMass Lowell's 4X100 team to second place in 43.01 seconds, just behind Stonehill (42.69).

On Friday night, senior Angus MacDonald (Methuen, Mass.) ran the 1,500 meters in 3:50.93 to place 14th overall (first among Division II-III runners) at Princeton's Sam Howell Invitational. The result currently pits MacDonald seventh on the NCAA Division II list.

Wundt, Regan and Bennett were among the top finishers in the 200 meter dash, Wundt placing third in 21.92; Regan fourth in 22.09 and Bennett seventh in 22.30.

Brown was among a handful of River Hawks who emerged tops among Division II and III athletes in their events. Along with the 4X400, Brown placed fourth overall (first) in the 1,500 meters in 3:59.48 while senior Eric McDonald (Groveland, Mass.) took sixth (second) in 4:03.56.

Sophomore Keith Lewis (Nashua, N.H.) led two teammates in the top five places in the 400 meter hurdles. Lewis placed second (first) in 54.79 seconds while sophomore Vladimir Francois (North Attleboro, Mass.) placed third (second) in 55.77 and freshman Richard Kirby (Tewksbury, Mass.) fifth in 56.12.

Sophomore Kevin Peter (North Attleboro, Mass.) led UMass Lowell's field athletes as he took fourth overall (first) in the discus with a throw of 144 feet, 2.0 inches. He also placed fourth in the hammer with a distance of 161' 5.0'', just ahead of sophomore Devin O'Neill (Braintree, Mass.) who took seventh with a throw of 147' 7.0''.

In a busy day, O'Neill also placed fifth in the shot put (46' 4.75'') and seventh in the javelin (164' 4.0).

UMass Lowell enters the Brown Springtime Invitational next Saturday.
