Behind a 4-for-5 showing with three RBI from junior Zach Berger (Coral Gables, Fla.), UMass Lowell baseball split a Saturday double-header at Saint Anselm by scores of 7-11 and 9-5.

UMass Lowell moved to 19-12-1 overall on the season, 9-6-1 in the Northeast-10 and 4-4-0 in the Northeast Division. Saint Anselm is now 16-18-1 overall, 8-7-1 in the NE-10 and 4-3-1 in the Northeast Division. The squads will rematch one final time tomorrow at 1 p.m. to close out the season series.

Despite a late rally that featured five runs in the ninth, the River Hawks came up short in game one, 11-7.
UMass Lowell's only run through the first seven innings came via a solo home run to center field by junior James Katsiroubas (Milton, Mass.) in the fourth inning, his third long ball of the year.

Facing an 11-1 deficit, the rally began in the eighth with a two-out RBI single to left-center by rookie Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.). The game really took off for UMass Lowell in the ninth as junior Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) ripped a two-run double to left, then scored on an error. A few batters later freshman Matthew Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) struck a two RBI single to left to cut the lead to four. Despite the momentum, the surge ultimately came up short, ending on a full count strikeout.

Katsiroubas ended the game 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Devlin was also 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.

The River Hawks used a variety of pitchers in the opener as starter Tyler Toyfair (Agawam, Mass.) exited after three innings. In all, four UMass Lowell pitchers combined to allow 14 hits, 11 earned runs and six walks.

Saint Anselm grabbed the lead in the first inning of the second game with a two-run double by Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) and a one-run double by Daniel DeCoste (Chelmsford, Mass.).

UMass Lowell cut the score to 3-1 in the fifth as designated hitter Berger blasted a solo homer over the right-center fence, his first of the season.

Saint Anselm added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth, responding with a two-run home run from Kelly to center field, pushing the deficit to 5-1.

The River Hawks countered with five runs in the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. It started with an RBI single to left by Katsiroubas, plating rookie Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) from second. With the bases loaded, Ricoy tallied a pair of RBI on a fielder's choice and Berger singled home two more runners on the next play.

UMass Lowell added to its lead in the eighth as senior Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) singled in Berger from third. Keeping up the pressure, DeGroot and senior Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass.) each hit RBI doubles before the frame was over.

Sophomore starting pitcher Mike Calzetta (Lawrence, Mass.) gave the River Hawks four solid innings on the mount, allowing three runs, three hits and three walks. Reliever James Hamilton (Harwich, Mass.) pitched the fifth, Bryant Guilmette (Hopkinton, Mass.) tossed the next three innings and Mike Sloban (Merrimac, N.H.) threw a scoreless ninth.

Berger finished game two with four hits, three RBI and two runs scored. He was joined by a strong effort from DeGroot, who batted 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs.
