Softball: UMass Lowell, Skyhawks Split

River Hawks win opener, 7-6; Stonehill avenges 15-4

Box Score Senior pitcher Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) batted 4 for 7 with three RBI and a run as UMass Lowell split with Stonehill College – winning the opener 7-6 and falling in the nightcap 15-4 – Friday morning in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams in Clermont, Fla.

With the split, UMass Lowell currently stands at 11-6 overall and 1-1 in the NE-10 and wraps its spring break trip Saturday with a doubleheader against Franklin Pierce at 11:00. The River Hawks play their first twin bill in the Northeast next Saturday at Saint Anselm (1:00) and open at home Wednesday, Mar. 28 against Bentley (3:00).

Stonehill is currently 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the NE-10.

With 13 RBI on the season, Boris currently ranks third on UMass Lowell's career RBI list (behind Donna Mills '96 with 126 and Laurie Tanguay '08 with 127) with 120 and is eight away from becoming UMass Lowell's career leader.

In the opener, Boris batted 2 for 4 with one RBI while senior C Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) hit 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI. Junior CF Ashley Daniels (Medford, Mass.) went 2 for 3 with two runs, including a solo shot in the sixth inning.
Junior P Kellie Reardon led Stonehill, going 2 for 3 with two runs and a walk while freshman 3B Jocelynne Morrell went 2 for 4 with three RBI and a run.

UMass Lowell jumped out to a 1-0 lead behind an RBI single from Panarelli, and added three runs in the second inning behind RBI singles from senior SS Meagan Guy (Berlin, Conn.) and Boris.

The River Hawks took a 7-0 lead in the with two runs in the fifth behind a bases loaded groundout from freshman RF Ariana Darcy (Walkill, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly from sophomore 3B Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.).

Stonehill, however, erupted for five runs in the sixth inning, led by a two-run double from Morrell, RBI groundouts from freshman 2B Christina Swider and sophomore LF Casey Remick and an RBI walk from sophomore 1B Nicole Eisenmann.

The Skyhawks cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh behind an RBI double from Morrell, but freshman pitcher Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.), who came on for the final inning, retired the next two batters for the save.

Boris earned the win to improve to 8-2, scattering five runs (two earned), five walks and four hits while striking out four. Reardon (0-2) took the loss as she allowed five hits, four runs (one earned) and a walk while striking out three.

In the nightcap, Stonehill scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back en route to a 15-4 win to earn a split. Junior SS Chelsea Stryker batted 3 for 3 with three RBI and three runs while Morell hit 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs. Reardon went 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs while Eisenmann hit 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBI.

Boris led the River Hawks, hitting 2 for 3 with a two-run home run in the third inning while junior 1B Bri Mahoney (Billerica, Mass.) went 2 for 2 with a leadoff solo shot. Freshman Aly Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.) batted 2 for 3 with a run and senior SS Meagan Guy (Tewksbury, Mass.) 1 for 2 with her team-leading fifth home run of the year.

Junior pitcher Kaitlin Andrews improved to 3-0 as she surrendered six hits and three earned runs while striking out one in 3.0 innings. Lanfranchi took the loss (3-3) as she allowed eight hits and five earned runs in the first inning before being replaced by Boris.

Stonehill highlighted the first inning with a three-run home run by Morrell as well as RBI hits from Eisenmann, sophomore LF Kaitlin Miller and Stryker.

UMass Lowell pulled two back in the third behind Boris' fourth home run of the season; and two more in the fourth behind solo home runs by Mahoney and Guy.

Stonehill added six more runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
