Panarelli Late Show Lifts UMass Lowell Over Dowling, 5-2

Ferraro, Guy with RBI doubles as River Hawks improve to 7-2

Senior Lindsi Panarelli: Two-run shot in the sixth.
Box Score Senior C Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) hit a two-run home run and sophomore 3B Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) followed with an RBI double in the sixth inning to lift UMass Lowell over Dowling College, 5-2, Sunday morning in a non-conference softball slash in Clermont, Fla.

The win was UMass Lowell's fifth in its last six games as it improved to 7-2 entering Sunday afternoon's game against Mercy College (1:00). Dowling, which finished the regular season No. 1 in the NCAA East Region Poll with a 42-8 record, slipped to 2-5.

UMass Lowell was supposed to meet Mercy College at 1:00, but the game was postponed due to rain. A make-up date has yet to be announced.

UMass Lowell trailed 2-1 entering the fifth inning when Ferraro walked and later scored when senior SS Meagan Guy (Berlin, Conn.) doubled to right field.

Panarelli broke the 2-2 deadlock in the sixth when, following a two-out single by senior pitcher Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.), she hit a two-run shot to centerfield. Senior DH Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass.) followed with a single and scored off Ferraro's double to centerfield.

Panarelli's home run was her second in as many games. She hit a three-run shot in Saturday's 11-7 loss to Kutztown in eight innings.

Dowling had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but junior Melissa Perez popped to Boris and freshman Jamie Laird hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Boris retired three of four batters in the seventh to improve to 5-1 this season. She allowed 10 hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out two in going the distance.

Senior Jessie Stavola slipped to 1-3 with the loss, scattering nine hits, five earned runs and a walk while striking out seven.

Boris batted 2 for 3 while Ferraro went 1 for 2 with a run and a walk. Panarelli batted 1 for 3.

Sophomore 2B Erin Fischetti went 2 for 3 with a run to lead the Golden Lions while senior CF Krystil Hofman also hit 2 for 3 with one RBI. Senior RF Deana Tortorici hit 2 for 4.
