No. 4 River Hawks Host No. 5 Southern Connecticut Sunday in NE-10 Quarterfinal

UMass Lowell meets surging Owls squad on `White-Out Weekend'

UMass Lowell, seeded No. 4, hosts No. 5 Southern Connecticut State Sunday afternoon (1:00) in the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Basketball Tournament quarterfinal round at the Costello Athletic Center.

Admission is $7 for adults; $4 for senior citizens and children 12 and under; and $1 for students with valid college identification. The first 100 UMass Lowell students with valid identification will be admitted free.

The University is staging a “White-Out Weekend,” as all River Hawks basketball fans are encouraged to wear white.

UMass Lowell clinched the No. 4 seed Tuesday with its 85-76 win over Bentley, which solidified fourth place. The River Hawks meet an Owls squad (14-12, 11-10 NE-10) which enters the postseason winner of four straight and six of their last seven games, including a 74-65 win over then-first place Adelphi.

Southern Connecticut's win over Adelphi enabled Franklin Pierce to win the NE-10 regular season title and clinch the No. 1 seed.

“Southern is playing very good basketball and is an extremely talented team,” said head coach Greg Herenda. “Between Trevon Hamlet and Langston Cousins, they have options on both sides of the basketball. (Coach) Mike Donnelly has done a terrific job turning his program around.”

Langston, a sophomore guard, leads the Owls with 17.2 points and shoots .466 from 3-point range while Hamlet, a junior forward, is close behind with 16.8 points on .526 field goal shooting.

With its win over Bentley, UMass Lowell snapped a four-game slide. Previously, the River Hawks suffered losses at Saint Anselm (72-68) and fell 74-71 at Franklin Pierce last weekend on a 3-point shot in the final seconds.

Should the higher seeds prevail in the first two rounds, UMass Lowell could face the Ravens in the semifinal Wednesday night.

UMass Lowell is led by sophomore G Akeem Williams (Brockton, Mass.) with averages of 16.9 points and 3.2 assists. Senior G Dipanjot Singh (Evanston, Ill.) has added 14.0 points while shooting .502 from the field and .466 from long range.

Williams, with 986 career points, is on the brink of becoming the 36th member of UMass Lowell's 1,000 Point Club. He was named to the NE-10 All-Conference Second Team Friday.

In other quarterfinal action, No. 1 Franklin Pierce will host the winner between No. 8 Bentley/No. 9 Assumption while Adelphi hosts the winner between No. 7 Pace/No. 10 New Haven. No. 3 Stonehill hosts No. 6 Merrimack, all on Sunday.

The first round games between Bentley and Assumption and Pace and New Haven will be played Friday night at 7:00.

The NE-10 Championship game is slated for Saturday, Mar. 3.
